Semaglutide & Weight Loss

Many of us struggle to lose weight and keep it off. This is a challenge as old as the human species. In fact, our DNA instructs us to gorge, or "pig out" when there is food, especially "carbs" available. A hundred thousand years ago, reliable access to food was rare, so those of us who could really pack it away were more likely to survive when food became scarce because we had built up fat stores to last us through hard times. "Winter is Coming" isn't just a marketing slogan from "Game of Thrones". It is a very real and primal instinct that isn't as useful now as it once was.

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a medication that has been FDA-approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, but the data originally submitted to the FDA and more recent studies have shown that it may be an effective weight loss tool for men. The drug works by mimicking the effects of a hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite and metabolism. GLP-1 is naturally produced in the gut and it helps to regulate glucose levels, stimulate insulin production, and reduce appetite. When taken as a once-weekly injection, semaglutide may lead to significant weight loss and improved body composition by mimicking the effects of GLP-1.

In a clinical trial of obese and overweight men, those who took semaglutide while following an exercise and diet protocol lost an average of 10% of their body weight, compared to just 2% in the control group. Additionally, semaglutide treatment resulted in a significant decrease in waist circumference, a key indicator of abdominal obesity and associated health risks. This suggests that semaglutide may not only help with overall weight loss but also may help in focusing the weight loss on the abdominal area.

Not only does semaglutide help with weight loss, but it can also improve overall health markers. Men taking the medication in the clinical trial saw improvements in blood sugar control, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure.

Potential Benefits

One of the key benefits of semaglutide is that it works by reducing hunger and cravings, making it easier to stick to a calorie-controlled diet. Additionally, it has been shown to improve metabolic health markers such as blood sugar and cholesterol levels, which can greatly reduce the risk of obesity-related diseases.

Potential Side Effects

Semaglutide has been well-tolerated in clinical trials, with the most common side effects being mild to moderate nausea and diarrhea. These side effects generally resolve within the first few weeks of treatment. However, like any medication, semaglutide also has potential risks and side effects, such as a slight increased risk of pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas. This risk is considered low and can be managed by monitoring blood tests.

It's important to note that semaglutide is a medication that requires a prescription and used only under the supervision of a healthcare professional. Your REV doctor will consider your overall health, medical history, and any other medications you're taking before prescribing semaglutide.
